In Adelaide you can enjoy stylish architecture, great shopping, sandy beaches, arts events, fine dining, nightlife and some of Australia's best café strips. The Adelaide Hills surround Adelaide on the eastern side and have many small villages with lots of history and natural wonders. Also, Adelaide is centrally located among the wine regions of Barossa Valley, Clare Valley and McLaren Vale, all of which are within day-trip distance.
South of Adelaide is Fleurieu Peninsula, the gateway to Kangaroo Island and home to coastal villages. The area surrounding the Murray River is South Australia's fruit growing areas. Kangaroo Island contains a vast amount of natural beauty unique to this part of Australia. The Yorke Peninsula is where South Australians go for their holidays.
The state also includes Kangaroo Island, Australia's third larges island. With nearly 1.6 million people, however, the state comprises less than 10% of the Australian population. Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. Its population is slightly over 1 million, which makes it by far the largest city in the otherwise sparsely populated state.
